It’s the Semi-Season One finale of the Creepy Cabaret! I distinctly remember working on the music for this one. Josh sent me a reference from Bach titled, “Prelude I in C Major, BMV 846“. Now, I am no pianist and I never claimed to be, so drawing something out of this piece that was reminiscent of the same energy and intention was not easy for me. I wanted to make sure I channeled the gridded, yet empathetic pattern from the original all the while maintaining a light, airy pleasantness. Especially against the backdrop of a contentious scene, this pushed me to expand my thinking.
Naturally, as we’re led through the story into the seduction of the antagonist, I felt something along the lines of Gymnopédie No. 1 would settle the listener into a gothic, false sense of security with the character before they’re unleashed onto the protagonist. I used a simple grand piano sample and shaped it with reverb and EQ to push it into the distance. The end of their entanglement pulls us in with the choral stylings of Somerville Sounds’ “The Meyer Choir“, wavering and embodying a gruesome scene of violence.
This season has been a refreshing challenge for me, managing the audio of an entire radio play of sorts in a short span of time. We only have one more episode in the barrel for this season, but I know that Josh is eagerly working on the next slew of episodes as we move into 2026 and beyond!
